pH:

Perfect Range 7.4 to 7.6

pH or Potential Hydrogen is a measure of the amount of acid or base in solution. Adding acid lowers the pH. Adding base or sodium carbonate raises the pH.

The pH of the human eye is 7.5 therefore this is the goal of pool or spa water.  All of the other factors are adjusted to meet this target.  If the pH is outside of the Perfect Range eyes and skin will be irritated.

A decrease in pH lowers the saturation index and therefore increases corrosion of both pool surfaces and equipment.

Increased pH decreases the effectiveness of sanitizers: At pH 7.2 bromine is 96% effective, chlorine 66%.  At pH 7.8 bromine is 87% effective, chlorine 33%
